Introduction
The banana, from the Scythamine family, is one of the best known and most consumed fruits in the world. It has an elongated shape, its skin is yellow, and its pulp is white, compact, soft, and very smooth. It is a very complete fruit at a nutritional level, and easy to digest. It grows in clusters, and is presented in the form of nine or ten hands attached to the trunk. It is grown in all tropical and subtropical countries in abundant quantities, forming part of the basic diet in the areas where it is grown.
Origin
Its origin is thought to be in tropical Asia. Currently, the main producing countries are: Ecuador – the largest producer in the world – several African countries, Caribbean countries, as well as Spain, where the famous Little Dwarf variety is grown in the Canary Islands.
Properties
It offers high content of sugars, mineral salts, and especially vitamins A, B and C. It is highly recommended for children and contributes to a healthy and balanced daily diet.
Consumption
It is mainly eaten raw, and it is an ideal fruit before and during sports, given its carbohydrate content. It can also be combined with other fruits in fruit salads, cocktails, ice cream, yogurt, and pastries.
Conservation
Bananas are kept in a cool, dry place.
