Introduction
Soursop, Annona muricata L. of the Annonaceae family, is the fruit of a tree of the same name, with rough bark and approximately 10 meters high tall. The fruits are large, between 15 to 20 cm. long, and when all its carpels are developed it is oblong, heart-shaped, and weighs between 4.5 and 6.8 kg. Its skin is green when ripe, and has numerous extensions similar to soft spines and directed towards the apex. Its pulp is white and cottony in appearance, containing numerous black seeds.
Origin
Soursop is native to the Caribbean, Mexico and Central and South America. It now grows in low-lying, humid, tropical areas around the world, as it is not fussy about the soil.
Properties
Much has been said about the anticancer properties of all parts of the soursop, from its leaves and pulp to its roots and seeds, due to its content in anonacina, and in fact it is used as a natural remedy against the disease, everything and that there are opinions contradictory about it. Likewise, it is considered an antimicrobial agent against bacterial and fungal infections, regulates high blood pressure, and antidepressant properties are attributed to it.
Consumption
Its consumption is typical in the Caribbean, in Africa and tropical Asia. It has a specific subacid and sweet flavor and is especially pleasant in ice cream and soft drinks. All in all, and that the less acidic and lower fiber content fruits can be eaten fresh directly with a spoon or chopped in salads or fruit cocktails, their greatest consumption is in the form of juice, either by mixing the pulp with water, or with milk, in which case, the drink is called champola or carato.
Conservation
It can be stored in optimal conditions for 5 to 6 days at a temperature of 25 to 27 ºC. To store it refrigerated, it is recommended to do so at a temperature of 13 ºC.
